LIST OF RESTRICTIONS AND EXCEPTIONS FOR MPDS
- 1. Geographic
- a. The state of New Jersey in 1962 and 1963 did not code race for death certificates and therefore the MPDS cannot stratify by race for these two years.
- b. Virginia mortality rates and numbers of deaths for the state are comparable to those listed in U.S. Vital Statistics. However, the county level has problems and it is suggested that mortality data for Virginia counties not be used. The county codes are not well defined for mortality datain the years 1950-62. Also, the individual county population data for the following counties and independent cities of Virginia should not be used, due to basic data problems for the age group 65 and over. The data must be consolidated for each of the following groups of counties:
- (county or city name and FIPS70 code)
- a. Fairfax Co. 51059, Arlington Co. 51013, Alexandria 51510, Fairfax City 51600, FallsChurch 51610
- b. Bedford City 51515, Bedford Co. 50019
- c. Covington 51580, Alleghany Co. 51005
- d. Fredericksburg 51630, Spotsylvania Co. 51177, Stafford Co. 51179
- e. Harrisonburg 51660, Rockingham Co. 51165
f. Martinsville 51690, Henry Co. 51089
- g. Suffolk 51800, Nansemond Co. 51123
h. Williamsburg 51830, James City Co. 51095, York Co. 51199
- Other areas in Virginia are apparently affected, but to a lesser degree, especially the Charlottesville, Franklin, Galax, and Roanoke areas.
- For the 1975 to 1978 estimates the data series for the population 65 and over were adjusted for most of the areas listed above, and the estimates for the 41 counties given on Table G-1 are not consistent with the 1970-75 estimates. Four of the areas were added for the first time in 1977, as shown in the footnote.
- c. Alaska is not broken down to the county level. Also, the population denominators for rates for Alaska are not available for the individual state, but do exist for total U.S. rates. The population estimates for Alaska reflect special problems relating to geography, identification of race, and military population.
- d. The MPDS included Hawaii in the total U.S. mortality base beginning in 1959 whereas other sources do not include Hawaii until 1960.
- 2. Year
- a. Population data are available for 1950-1992
- b. Mortality data are available for 1950-1992
- 3. Cause of Death
- a. Only cancer mortality data are available for 1950-1961 inclusive
- b. AIDS mortality (cause no. 63 on default list) is only available from 1987-92. Rates for the default 1985-89 period are based on a 3-year average annual rate (1987-89).
- 4. Race/Sex
- a. Data are presented solely for the race/sex groups: white male, nonwhite male, white female and nonwhite female. Currently, the nonwhite race group contains the races: Black, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and "Race Not Specified". It is not known whether or not this last category contains any whites.
- 5. Age
- a. All age groups in the population database are in 5-year groupings as: <5, 5-9, 10-14, . . . , 75-79, 80-84, 85+.
